Functionality is very important to me. I like to think of my things as being useful, a vase to hold beautiful flowers, a special plate or cup for dining. Symmetry is important in my pieces whether thrown or slab built: my imagery is derived from it. I sometimes carve patterns from nature into wet clay. Other times I paint with glaze using brushes, wax, sponges and stamps. I fire my pots in a high fire reduction kiln where the burning fuel uniquely reduces, modifies, and deepens each color to reflect the muted tones of nature.
