CRAIG HINSHAW, MY CLAY WORK IS INFLUENCED BY AMERICAN FOLK ART. I AM ESPECIALLY DRAWN TO EARLY AMERICAN WEATHER VANES AND THEIR STRONG SILHOUETTE. I ONLY EMPLOY DOCILE OR PASSIVE ANIMALS, (A RABBIT, NEVER A FOX OR A COW, NEVER A BULL). THIS ALLOWS ME TO CREATE A TENSION WITH THE SITUATION I ENCASE OR INTERTWINE THE ANIMAL IN. I FEEL THE PIECES REFLECT CURRENT ISSUES., , SHIRLEY KNUDSVIG, MY CURRENT WORK IS CONCERNED WITH DEPTH, COLOR, MOVEMENT, SHADOW, AND THE MYSTERY THAT LIES BENEATH THE SURFACE. MY PIECES ARE MADE FROM HIGH-FIRE PORCELAIN. TO CREATE TEXTURE, I ADD SLIPS, AND SPRAY MULTIPLE LAYERS OF GLAZE.

MY INFLUENCES, HAVE BEEN THE BEAUTIFUL CALIFORNIA COAST WHERE I WAS BORN AND SPENT MY FIRST TWENTY-FIVE YEARS, MY FATHER, WHO WAS A POTTER AND WHO ENCOURAGED AND SUPPORTED ME, AND THE COUNTLESS TEACHERS AND FELLOW ARTISTS WHO CONTINUE TO INSPIRE ME BY THEIR DEDICATION TO THEIR CRAFT.

SKNUDSVIG@CLAYGALLERY.ORG, , MONICA WILSON, MY WORK IS INFLUENCED BY THE CONSTANT PUSH-PULL BETWEEN THE ORGANIC AND THE MECHANICAL, VARIATION IN PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL WEIGHT, AND THE PROCESS OF WORKING WITH A MALLEABLE SURFACE AND FIRING IT TO A DENSE UNYIELDING STONE., , DONNA WILLIAMS, TRANSFORMATION FROM WET ARTICULATED OBJECT TO SOLID FORM IS THE MOST FASCINATING ASPECT OF WORKING WITH CLAY. REALIZING AND MAINTAINING THAT FLUIDITY THROUGH TO THE FINAL STAGE IS THE CHALLENGE. WORKING WITH CLAY IS ALWAYS AN ENDEAVOR IN COMMUNICATION, RECONCILIATION, AND TRANSFORMATION., , SHIRLEY WHITE-BLACK, AS AN ARTIST I STRIVE TO MAKE IDEAS VISIBLE. MY TOOLS ARE THOUGHTS, DREAMS AND ASSOCIATIONS. MY MATERIALS ARE EARTH, WATER AND PIGMENT. MY COMPANIONS ARE ANXIETY AND DETERMINATION. MY CHALLENGE IS THE CONVERSION OF FORMLESS MATTER INTO MEANING. I CANNOT ENVISION A MORE CONFOUNDING, ENGAGING, SURPRISING EXISTENCE. IT IS FOR OTHERS TO JUDGE THE OUTCOME., , JOE SZUTZ, I HAND BUILD ABSTRACT SCULPTURES AND WALL PIECES EMBODYING MOVEMENT AND DYNAMIC TENSION THROUGH CONTRASTING AND COMPLEMENTARY FORM, LINES, TEXTURES AND COLORS. I'M INSPIRED BY THE CONTRASTS, IRONIES AND IMPERFECTIONS IN NATURAL AND HUMAN OBJECTS.

EXHIBITING ARTIST: MICHIGAN CERAMICS 2010, , ELVERA SHAPPIRIO, FUNCTIONALITY IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME. I LIKE TO THINK OF MY THINGS AS BEING USEFUL, A VASE TO HOLD BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS, A SPECIAL PLATE OR CUP FOR DINING. SYMMETRY IS IMPORTANT IN MY PIECES WHETHER THROWN OR SLAB BUILT: MY IMAGERY IS DERIVED FROM IT. I SOMETIMES CARVE PATTERNS FROM NATURE INTO WET CLAY. OTHER TIMES I PAINT WITH GLAZE USING BRUSHES, WAX, SPONGES AND STAMPS. I FIRE MY POTS IN A HIGH FIRE REDUCTION KILN WHERE THE BURNING FUEL UNIQUELY REDUCES, MODIFIES, AND DEEPENS EACH COLOR TO REFLECT THE MUTED TONES OF NATURE., , SUSANNE STEPHENSON, FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS THE FOCUS OF MY WORK IN CERAMICS HAS BEEN ABSTRACTING LANDSCAPES IN LOW FIRE TERRA COTTA CLAY.  THE BRILLIANT RANGE OF CERAMIC PIGMENTS AT THIS TEMPERATURE IN THICK, JUICY SLIPS AND ENGOBES CONTINUES TO HOLD MY INTEREST. RECENTLY I HAVE CREATED MORE TEXTURE BY ADDING PAPER PULP AND STRING TO MY SLIPS, WHICH HAS INCREASED THE DEPTH OF MY SURFACES.  THE IMPACT OF THE MATERIAL CLAY ON MY IDEAS IS IMPORTANT, IT HELPS ME PULL OUT THE GESTURAL QUALITIES IN MY WORK., , JOHN STEPHENSON, IN THE BROADEST SENSE I AM CHALLENGED AS A CERAMIC SCULPTOR TO DEAL WITH EMPTY SPACE IN MUCH THE SAME WAY AS A COMPOSER OF MUSIC DEALS WITH SILENCE OR THE ABSENCE OF SOUND. WITH CLAY AS THE VEHICLE I AM ENGAGED IN TURNING FORM AND SPACE INSIDE OUT. OFTEN I WORK TO FREE FORMS FROM THE DOWNWARD PULL OF GRAVITY., , YIU KEUNG LEE, I LIKE MY WORK TO SURPRISE, INSPIRE AND HAVE A LONG LASTING EFFECT ON MY SOUL EACH TIME I WORK ON IT. I AM NOT PURSUING A PERFECTLY CRAFTED SCULPTURE; MY SCULPTURE IS CREATED TO INSURE IMPERFECTION. THE OUTCOME BECOMES RELATIVELY LESS IMPORTANT, BUT THE PROCESS PROVIDES A SENSE OF SELF-CONFIDENCE, A WAY OF SELF-CRITICISM, AND A PRELUDE TO FINDING SOLUTIONS FOR WHAT SEEM TO BE PROBLEMS IN THE PREVIOUS WORKS. MY WORK IS OFTEN AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL; I AM PART OF THE SCULPTURE. THE FIGURE IS A CATALYST WHICH TIES EVERYTHING TOGETHER AND ANCHORS ALL THE ELEMENTS WITHIN THE STRUCTURE. THE OBJECTS CONGLOMERATE INTO THREE DIMENSIONAL DIARIES., , DEBBIE THOMPSON, THE NATURAL WORLD HAS ALWAYS BEEN MAGICAL FOR ME. IT IS A PLACE I CAN GO TO BE SOOTHED, INSPIRED, ENTERTAINED & REJUVENATED. THIS CONNECTION PROVIDES ME WITH CONTENT FOR MY WORK., , KRISTINE STEWART, A COPSE OF BIRCH STANDS TOGETHER, A LINEAR STUDY IN BLACK AND WHITE BRANCHES AS GESTURING ARMS.

I AM IN CONSTANT AWE OF FORESTS LIVING AND BREATHING AMONG US.

, , GAIL DAPOGNY, THE FASCINATING THING ABOUT CLAY IS THAT IT IS AS SIMPLE AS A LUMP OF EARTH, AND AS COMPLEX AS THE PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY AND ARTISTRY THAT TURN A FRAGILE LUMP OF EARTH INTO SOMETHING DURABLE AND WONDERFUL, THAT CAN LAST THOUSANDS OF YEARS. FOR ME, THERE IS LITTLE IN LIFE MORE SATISFYING THAN SITTING DOWN AND MAKING A POT. THE FORM AND TEXTURE AND COLOR MERGE—ON A GOOD DAY—INTO SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL AND ALIVE, SOMETHING TO BE USED AND HANDLED, AND EVEN, WITH A LITTLE LUCK, CHERISHED., , ROYCE DISBROW, THE TRANSMOGRIFICATION FROM HISTORY TEACHER TO POTTER TOOK LESS THAN THIRTY YEARS TO COMPLETE. HOWEVER, IT LEFT THE ARTIST WITH A UNIQUE OUTLOOK ON LIFE AS A SURREALIST ART FORM. WHETHER IT IS A SERVING TRAY WITH A PATTERN TITLED, "CIRCUS WAGON CONTAINING ALIEN PLANT LIFE," A QUEEN ANNE CHAIR DANCING THE CAN-CAN OR A SLUG HABITAT, MY ART MUST ENTERTAIN ME WITH HUMOR OR AT LEAST A STORY. IF IT ALSO ENTERTAINS YOU, THE VIEWER, THEN WE HAVE CONNECTED.     , , JT ABERNATHY, FOR SOME BASIC REASON I DON'T KNOW, CERAMICS FITS MY PERSONALITY. CERAMICS PROBABLY HAS THE MOST POTENTIAL FOR EXPRESSION AS ANY OF THE MEDIUMS. I AM NOT ONLY INTERESTED IN CLAY FOR POTTERY. CLAY INTERESTS ME AS A STRUCTURAL MEDIUM, A HIGH TEMPERATURE MEDIUM, AND CERTAINLY AS AN ART MEDIUM.

CLAY HAS ANCIENT ROOTS. BEGINNING POTTERY WAS ESSENTIALLY A CONTAINING MEDIUM FOR WATER, FOOD AND OIL. I'VE BEEN POTTING FOR 60 YEARS NOW. MY INTEREST AT THIS POINT IS POTTERY AS ART., , CLAY GALLERY, CLAY GALLERY HAS SIX SPECIAL EXHIBITS EACH YEAR BY GALLERY ARTISTS AND GUEST ARTISTS. DISPLAYS CHANGE MONTHLY., ,
